Yvette Baker Trophy Round 1 Results
Organisers Comments
A lucky day to hold an event I believe and despite a few minor hiccups it was a great day helped in no small part by the weather. (you didn’t see the field the previous weekend!).
Firstly a big, big thank you to all the helpers from SELOC who gave up their time on Sunday. The start team who spent most of their day in the wind even though I promised them shelter in the woods. The EOD / registration team who had to abandon the attempt to put up the tent because of the wind and instead spent the whole day in a cattle truck! The car parking team who organised themselves so successfully to get all the cars both in and out without my help. The road crossing team who ensured all competitors made their way safely across the road. The finish team who spent all day at the finish (quite a wait for the final competitors) – I hope they found a sheltered spot! The junior drinks team who ensured that all competitors were offered a drink – sometimes before they even knew they wanted one! The IT team who have made the whole day much less stressful for me and finally my biggest thanks go to Tony Davies – the planner. He has sweated over a hot OCAD file for many weeks and delivered some fantastic courses.
SELOC would also like to say a big thank you to the competitor who ‘found’ the 4 lost control boxes while out on his course and was able to direct us back to collect them. I’m sorry I don’t know your name but the treasurer is most grateful to you. (He was having palpitations about the cost of replacing them!)
I need to apologise to the competitor who found the only tree in the wood that jumped out and attacked him – luckily we were able to clean up the blood but he does have a war wound to remember Tockholes by!On behalf of the landowner and tenant, John Smith and Frank Cleary, I would also like to thank all the competitors whose car parking fee was donated to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. You raised £157 altogether.
Congratulations to both DEE and LOC who somehow managed to achieve a tie for first place in the North West Round of the Yvette Baker Trophy (full results available). Well done to all junior competitors.
And finally thank you to John Smith and Frank Cleary for their support with the car parking and provision of shelter. To United Utilities for permission to use the area and to PFO for loaning us the area.
Thank you.

Controllers Comments:
Very well done to Tony for exemplary planning - meticulous with map updates, sorting out contraflow and loading issues, and generally using a nice little area to best advantage.
Apologies to competitors on Very Short Green and Short Green especially, for allowing a couple of control sites that were too slippy to get away from.
John Britton
Planners Comments:
Firstly thanks to John Britton (controller) for his help & guidance, before & during the event. Also thanks to Caroline and the SELOC helpers who made all go so smoothly on the day. A final thank you to the weather, wasn’t it a superb day.
Tockholes is a very pleasant wooded valley, but can present a significant challenge for orienteering, as most of you found out. The courses were planned to avoid the road choice, but even so a few competitors did use this option. The many tracks and paths complicated the planning, as I tried to limit long path running, and ensure the courses use the best of the area.
The crossing points (gaps in the wall) on the longer courses were repaired in the week before the event. As the wall was not too high, and did have helpful ‘steps’, we thought this would not impede progress.
You may be aware that we had 5/6 controls vandalised overnight. These were along the far west side of the map in an area with few paths and not generally used by the public. Thanks to John’s experience we were able to programme 4 new Si boxes, and the controls were replaced by the 10am start.
My thanks to the competitor (sorry, we didn’t get your name) who was on the Yellow course who reported that he’d seen our controls on a waste heap. This was some 300m off the map, so we’d probably not have found them!

Good luck to all those competing in the British Champs this weekend! #orienteering
