SELOC Introductory Event - Darcy Lever, Bolton & Results

E-mail Print

Thanks to all for turning out, especially Carl for getting the bulk of the planning and all those who helped on the day in various ways. Good to see some competitors from further afield, though shame we had clashes with other clubs' events nearby. The bright sunshine certainly helped make a good day of it. Congratulations to Josh, Therése and Kevan on their victories, I imagine they'll all be pleasantly but modestly surprised.

Darcy Lever isn't great at this time of year because of the vicious vegetation, but it has enough detail to be very interesting in the spring. There are enough options for Yellow and Orange courses, and the way our juniors are going, we'll need to add some more difficult courses next time although a true Light Green might be difficult to squeeze in.

The vegetation was what persuaded me to put a score event on rather than a conventional technical course, so that you had options to avoid the worst. A straightforward score would have been a bit boring so I picked up the "Escalator" concept from CompassSport magazine. I'd hoped to make it a bit fast and furious by keeping the time short and thereby forcing rapid strategic decisions on you about whether to start low or middling, when to break off for the second quartile scores and when to go for the bunch of highest scoring but difficult controls. I think I probably made the time a bit too short at 30 minutes allowed(I obviously remember when you could all still run and think fast!), but 45 minutes would have given you a bit too long and cut out at least one of the strategic decisions for the faster runners.

SELOC's next event is a full Regional one at Tockholes on October 10th, so we don't then have another Saturday event until the last Saturday in November, at Leverhulme Park in Bolton. Hope to see you there.
