Clowbridge is not a very
technical area to plan on but listening to comments at the end a fair
number of people were caught out by the number of walls and ruins and by
ill judged contouring. People I spoke to claimed to have enjoyed their
morning so thanks to those and to everybody else who turned up on the
day.
Although courses
from the Near Start were short several people expressed thanks for this as
they were out for what they considered a suitable length of time.
Apparently for W55's being out for 90 minutes with 14 controls is not what
at least one competitor is looking for.
Apologies to
those starting at the Far Start for the "rough stuff" on the eastern side
of the map. Joining a discussion by two M55's showed that even on a tussocky
open moor there is still route choice available.
Thanks to Steve,
the Controller, for his help and advice and to his Elspeth, his assistant
controller for helping to check control sites and helping to bring in
controls at the end. Thanks also to those others who helped to put out and
bring in controls.

Controller's Comments
Unfortunately
Clowbridge is not the most technical of areas and hence it is difficult to
plan courses that fully challenge the most able competitors. At
08.00 on the morning of the event the area was shrouded in thick mist
which if it had continued would have required more precise navigation,
albeit at the expense of preventing competitors the opportunity to enjoy
the fine views from both sides of the hillside. Undoubtably the
courses beginning at the Near Start were too short and I would like to
apologise to all runners who felt they were "short changed". This
should not distract from the exceptional performances from some of the
more senior competitors, with (for example) the winners of M/W60L covering
the terrain at a speed that puts many of their younger colleagues to
shame.
I would like to
thank Caoline Barcham for her organisation of the event and Roy Stephenson
for his planning and updating of the map. Also thanks to my younger
daughter, Elspeth, for acting as Assistant Controller.

Comments
I would firstly like to thank all those
members (and non members) of SELOC without whose help and support this
event would not have gone as smoothly as it did. Particular thanks to
Darren and Paul who took on sheep control as well as manning the finish.
The experience of all the help teams made my job a lot easier and allowed
the event to run well. Also, for their help and support, I have to thank
the United Utilities rangers, Linda and Stephen, as well as United
Utilities PLC.
The courses planned
and controlled by Roy and Steve were verbally appreciated
by a large number of competitors even if some disliked the tussocks! Thank
you for your experience.
I would also like to thank all the
competitors who made it back safely, before courses closed, which allowed
me to get home sooner than I expected.
Lastly a big thanks
to the IT team, particularly Paul Turner, without whose hard work before,
during and after the event this report would not be available for you with
the results.
